Specialty & Caregiver Classes

Not every emergency happens on a unit floor or at a pool deck. It happens on a living room rug with a toddler and a grandparent in the room, or in a grooming salon with a dog in respiratory distress. These are the courses for the people who will be standing there. The skills are the same ones we teach clinicians. The setting is a house, a car, a salon, a family.

Pet First Aid

Pet First Aid is built for pet owners, caregivers, pet groomers and animal lovers who would rather not find out what they do not know at eight o'clock on a Sunday night. It is hands-on training in the injuries and health problems dogs and cats actually turn up with.

The course covers pet anatomy and basic physiology, recognizing signs of distress and common health problems, and first aid for dogs and cats including wound care, CPR and manual choking intervention. It also covers heatstroke, poisoning and allergic reactions, how to transport an injured pet safely to veterinary care, and the proactive safety measures that stop a good share of these emergencies from happening at all.

Who Takes It

Owners who want to be useful instead of frantic, groomers and daycare staff who handle other people's animals all day, and foster and rescue volunteers. Students who successfully complete the course receive a Pet First Aid certification.

Advanced Childcare Program

This in-person course is for adults — especially new parents, foster parents and adoptive parents — who want to sharpen their childcare skills rather than piece them together from the internet at two in the morning. It is led by childcare experts and it assumes you are caring for children of any age.

It covers infant and child care techniques, discipline and behavior guidance, and emergency response. Students get hands-on practice with feeding, diapering and bedtime routines alongside life-saving skills: first aid, CPR and choking relief. The course also covers how to build a safe, nurturing environment and how to stay calm when the situation is not.

Where It Runs

We offer this program in community locations around the region as well as at our Woburn classroom. Agencies, foster networks and parent groups often book it as a private session for a cohort. Certification details are confirmed at registration.

Grandparents Getting Started

Best practice in infant and child care has moved since most grandparents last did this daily, and nobody enjoys being told that by their adult child. This course, taught by certified Safe Sitter® instructors, is a straightforward way to catch up.

Participants learn the latest best practices in infant and child care, behavior management strategies, and essential life-saving techniques including manual choking intervention, first aid and injury response. Instructors also cover the part that is not clinical at all: setting boundaries, keeping a good relationship with your adult children, and making the most of the time you get with your grandchildren.

Who It Is For

Grandparents doing regular childcare, occasional weekend sitting, or a summer of it. It is offered in community locations and books well as a group session for senior centers, councils on aging and family groups.

HSI Child and Babysitter Safety (CABS)

The HSI Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) program prepares teens and young adults — ages 11 to 14 — for safe, responsible babysitting. It treats sitting as a job, which is exactly how the good sitters treat it.

The course covers starting a babysitting business, handling parents and expectations, caring for children, and responding to emergencies. It uses a magazine-style guide and vlogger-style videos, so the material lands with the age group instead of bouncing off it. Students sign up and get certified in First Aid, CPR and AED.

Choosing Between Sitter Courses

CABS is one of several sitter programs we run. Safe Sitter® and Red Cross Babysitter's Training cover similar ground with their own curricula and age ranges — see our babysitting, wilderness and camp training page, or call and we will tell you honestly which one fits your child.

Car Seat Safety Training

We also run car seat safety training for parents, grandparents and caregivers. Dates, format and current details change, so call (617) 820-9862 or email info@wickedsafetytraining.org and we will tell you what is scheduled.

Who These Programs Are For

  • New, foster and adoptive parents — adults taking on childcare and wanting it done properly
  • Grandparents — regular or occasional caregivers catching up on current practice
  • Young sitters and their families — ages 11 to 14 starting out with CABS
  • Pet owners and animal professionals — groomers, daycare staff, rescue and foster volunteers
  • Community organizations — senior centers, libraries, parent groups and agencies hosting a session

How We Work With Groups and Community Locations

Several of these programs are offered in community locations rather than only at our classroom, because that is where the people who need them already are. If you run a senior center, a library, a parent group, a foster agency, a grooming salon or a veterinary practice, we will bring the course to you and handle scheduling, rosters, eCard issuance and certification records so nobody is chasing paperwork afterward.

Founded in 2019, Wicked Safety Training is an American Red Cross Premier Licensed Training Provider, an AHA Training Site and an HSI Training Center, with over 100 years of combined staff experience. That multi-agency footing is why one provider can cover a grandparent, a teenage sitter and a hospital nurse in the same week.

Registration and Rescheduling

Need to change your date? Transfers requested more than 24 hours before class are available for a $50 fee, subject to availability. Aquatics courses follow a separate refund schedule. See our Terms.
